Online Therapy – what you need to know
What is online therapy?
Online therapy is a form of therapy that relies on the benefits of modern media. Most commonly, Zoom (voice only or voice+picture) is used for communication. In exceptional cases, phone communication (including Whatsapp or other communication apps) can also be used.
If you are interested in this therapy modality and want to work with an online psychologist, read on, because there are things to keep in mind before deciding whether to choose this solution.
What you need to know before working with an online psychologist, in brief:
- you need a Zoom account, a computer/laptop with a webcam or microphone and a fast internet connection
- if needed, you can also use your phone to conduct your meetings
- you can schedule your therapy sessions online from Monday to Friday, anytime between 12 noon and 8pm
- the cost per session starts at 200$, with discounts for packages
- you make the appointment yourself, choose the date and time you want and then pay the cost of the session, all on the website
When considering an online therapist, you should consider the following advantages and disadvantages of this therapeutic modality:
Advantages:
- it’s easier:
- you don’t need to come into an office
- hours are much more flexible
- if you don’t turn on the camera, you could hypothetically not even change out of your pijamas
- if you don’t leave near me, it’s the only way for us to work together
- if your health prevents you from leaving the house or you have a condition like agoraphobia, online therapy could provide the necessary resources to feel better, without forcing you to do things that you may not be able to yet
- if you have social anxiety, online therapy is an excellent method of getting help to deal with it
- young people might be more easily persuaded to start therapy if it’s online, because they usually are very receptive to anything that takes place with the help of modern technology
- usually online therapy is attended from home, which is a safe environment for most people, which makes the process easier, as the patient feels more relaxed and may be more inclined to open up
- if you worry about being seen by someone going into a therapist’s office, online therapy solves that concern
- if you have reasons for which you may not want the therapist to know who you are (maybe you are a high-profile individual or something to that extent), online therapy is also useful.
Disadvantages:
- too much relaxation can lead to poor discipline, which may be a problem: even if online therapy has fewer restraints, you will still need to be on time for the session and stick to the schedule.
- interaction by means of technology is not the same as face to face interaction. For that reason, building a connection and establishing trust may take longer than face to face. Not necessarily, but it’s something to consider.
- when doing online therapy, confidentiality and privacy are also on you, not just the therapist: you will need to find a way to attend sessions without interruptions and without a chance that someone might listen on your conversation.
- when you rely on technology, sometimes that technology fails you: laptops die off, connections get shut-down and so on. In that case, sometimes the only solution is to postpone the session, which might get frustrating.
- online therapy is ill-suited for people with psychiatric conditions
