Gaming addiction
on computer or phone
What are computer games?
Almost everyone knows what a computer or phone is, but what exactly are computer games?
Essentially, a game puts the player in an imaginary world where they play by certain rules, where their choices matter and where the consequences of those choices can surprise them.
Games played alone are a source of entertainment, while games played with other players are imbued with various social skills that allow players to make friends and do things together.
The Internet is full of addictive games. The most popular games are those played on the computer. These games are usually played by people who, at one time or another, have a lot of time on their hands.
There are many different types of web games you can play on the internet. Some of these games are free and some cost money to play.
The most dangerous are the ones that are apparently free. They operate on a model called freemium. That is, the game is free to play up to a point (usually the point at which the game’s developers feel you are sufficiently addicted to it). After that, if you want to progress in the game, you have to start paying. Often, the amounts become absolutely astronomical.
I recently read an article about a young man in the UK who had spent over £100,000 on such a game.
Such an addiction is no joke and that is why it is important that more and more people are aware of the dangers of these games.
Successful addictive technologies and how companies exploit the workings of our brains to get us addicted to their products and services
Technology addiction is now the most common addiction for teenagers and it is unusual for them to exist without technology. People born in the last 15-20 years are referred to as “digital natives” as they do not know a world where present technology did not exist.
Almost everyone nowadays has a live social media feed on their phone, as we don’t want to miss a single message or notification. Why do we do this? Because when we receive a message or notification, a pleasure hormone called dopamine is released in our brains. It “feels” good, it makes us feel good when we feel it, so we want more. And then we wait anxiously for the next notification.
We are addicted to our digital devices, especially smartphones, but what do they actually do? They allow us to connect with others, meet new friends and make long-term relationships. They also provide access to information that is always up-to-date and ranked in order of popularity.
Some apps are not intentionally addictive and could be used as productivity tools. But the developers of many digital products have intentionally developed addictive technologies that exploit individuals’ cognitive biases and primal psychology to keep users permanently active. Digital devices have opened us up even more to addiction, occupying both attention category alerts – staying present on our devices – and rewards – getting likes, comments on social videos, or likes on our Instagram photos.
The challenge becomes, how do we approach and understand the topic of addiction in a meaningful way without being consumed by it?
An addictive technology is any technology that induces obsessive use. We are human beings and as such we can never truly be free of addiction, sometimes we just need that little morning appreciation reaction to have a better day.
Perhaps the most prevalent form of addictive technology applications are video games. Video games are designed with addictive qualities specifically to get you hooked. And once we are hooked on a game, the hooks of other games form even faster and stronger because the mechanism is already created and reinforced.
Many games now played on phone or computer now have mechanisms to prevent player “chill”, i.e., if you somehow get it in your head to stop playing, you get all sorts of notifications with all sorts of promised rewards to get you back in the game:
- you see your character die if you don’t do something.
- you’ve just been attacked by player X, if you don’t defend yourself you can lose everything
- you have received X amount of credits in the game, but you have to enter the game within 1 hour to receive it
In addition, many games have the ability to detect user moods by analysing the player’s facial expressions and body language. This is achieved by using artificial intelligence, which can detect emotions in real time.
With this information, artificial intelligence can then adjust the game accordingly. For example, if a player is feeling sad, they will be given an easier level or more time to complete it. If they feel happy, they will be given a harder level or less time to complete it.
This is all done to keep the addiction active and avoid demotivating players, which could lead to them deciding not to play.
Benefits of games
Games have benefits, not just drawbacks.
First of all, playing on a computer or phone can be a great way to relax and have fun. But research suggests there are other benefits too.
Games can help people with mental health problems such as depression or anxiety. They can also help people recovering from a stroke or brain injury.
Computer games are also good for developing children’s skills. It helps them develop problem-solving skills, memory and coordination.
It can also help people with physical disabilities improve their quality of life.
Solving puzzles or riddles in games can improve intellectual ability and intelligence.
What is computer game addiction?
Games have different effects on people: some people may play video games for hours on end every day, while others may only play for an hour or two each day.
Computer games have been shown to change the structure of players’ brains, while they become addicted to them. These effects vary from person to person and are not the same for everyone who plays them. Some people who regularly play video games may show changes in brain structures, such as deposits of a protein called “GAMMA-aminobutyric acid” or GABA in the brain. Some of these changes can be long-lasting and can lead to difficulty concentrating and focusing.
A study by Gauthier et al. found that chronic video game players had significant decreases in grey matter compared to non-players. Another study by Jones et al. found that after a person played a violent video game, there was an increase in amygdala activity and an increase in blood flow to the amygdala. The findings of this study suggest that violent video games may be associated with increased aggression.
It must be said, however, that the effects of video games are not always negative. Many studies show that video games can help people with certain mental illnesses, such as anxiety or depression. A study by Bentz et al. showed that playing a first-person shooter game decreased participants’ anxiety when they were given immediate feedback on their performance. Another study by Kuss et al . showed that playing a first-person shooter game helped participants focus on the present moment and decreased rumination, which is common in anxiety disorders. We also have evidence that video games can be helpful for people with mild cognitive impairment. There are many ways that video games can be used to help people, but I would argue that the effects of these games are not always positive.
Gaming is no longer a dream job for all the kids around us (now the dream job is to have a successful YouTube channel), but it has evolved into a hobby, and if not kept in check, can evolve into a serious problem in society, similar to the problem posed by gambling.
It used to be that those addicted to computer games were a few kids with social adjustment problems, considered by others to be “geeks” or just plain weird. Today, many parents are reasonably concerned when their children can spend 8 or even 12 hours a day playing video games. The nature of addiction is no different, even if some elements have changed. The basic pattern remains: the game activates a special sensation that can be addictive because of its immediate reward properties.
How to recognise the signs of computer game addiction
Computer game addiction is a serious problem that can lead to many negative consequences. It is important to recognise the signs of computer game addiction so that it can be treated before it becomes too late.
The signs of computer game addiction aren’t always easy to spot, but there are some telltale signs you should look out for.
If you notice any of these signs in your child (or, why not, your partner), then they may be addicted to games:
- spends more time playing games than doing anything else
- playing games even when they know they should be doing something else
- gets angry or upset when they are not allowed to play
- neglects schoolwork or other responsibilities because of games
- gets lost in the game and neglects everything around them
- has lost interest in other activities he used to enjoy
There are many signs of computer game addiction, these above are just a few of the most important.
The problematic rise of game addiction throughout society and the dangers that teenagers are not aware of
The rise of gaming addiction among young people is a major concern these days. This addiction poses the same risks as any other addictive substance, the only difference being that it also offers a virtual escape from reality, including for those suffering from mental health disorders or living in poverty. At least five children commit suicide every day in the US due to gaming-related depression, and people go to extreme lengths to continue playing games, often with detrimental consequences on other aspects of their lives.
Addiction to computer or phone games is a dangerous addiction because most people don’t know where to turn for help. Gamers can be of any age, with different income levels and life experiences. One of the most worrying factors for all those who study this phenomenon is the increase in addiction, especially among teenagers, and their lack of understanding of the dangers.
Negative effects for teenage gamblers include: debt, absenteeism, lower grades (due to both time spent gambling and effects on brain development), mood disorders where increased gambling activity has been associated with dysthymia or bipolar mania.
Gambling addiction is becoming a growing problem and is affecting more and more people, especially teenagers. The dangers of gambling addiction are not always clear to people who are addicted to it. Game addiction is a serious problem that needs to be addressed by society as soon as possible before it becomes impossible to stop.
The proposed solution is not an easy one, as it includes many different factors and many players who need to be involved and work together to solve the problem. The first step towards the solution is to recognise that there is a problem in the first place and that gambling addiction affects people of all ages and socio-economic classes, including children and teenagers.
There should be a unified attitude across society on how to prevent underage gaming and how to educate people about the dangers of computer and phone games. Children should be educated about the risks of games, using age-appropriate materials that are clear, concise and easy to understand. For example, you can tell them a story about a child who tries to play with his friends, but gets caught in an endless cycle of getting different achievements in his game. Parents should be informed by their children’s teachers and schools if their children have such concerns that visibly affect their normal daily functioning.
The role of parents in getting their children to treat computer games as just one of many distractions
With the rise of violence in society, parents are now increasingly concerned about screen time and wonder whether their children really need it.
A study shows that exposing children to games or digital technology affects them psychologically and can disrupt their development. The study found a direct link between exposure to screens for two hours or more daily and an increase in ADHD symptoms among children.
The American Psychological Association recognises this problem and has issued a warning about children playing too many video games. They say that “play is essential to the human experience, and children’s natural curiosity motivates them to explore with their bodies and minds.” However, the APA advises parents to strictly monitor the time children spend playing video games and not to worry if they play for short periods of time.
6 ways to get rid of computer game addiction
Computer game addiction is a serious problem that affects many people. It can be hard to get rid of this addiction, but there are a few ways you can try.
1) Set a time limit for gaming: find out how much time a day is too much for you to spend gaming and how much time you are willing to invest in this activity. If you find that you can only play for an hour or two a day, this is a good place to start to control your habit.
2) Take a break from gaming: Put your console or computer away for a few hours or days and then come back to it later with fresh eyes. You might be amazed that you spent so much time playing games, and you might even find that you actually find the game boring.
3) Play games with friends, real games, not on the computer or phone.
4) Find other hobbies: Find something else to do with your time besides video games. This something else can be anything from reading books to playing sports or even going for a walk.
5) Get rid of the computer game console in your room or even your house. The easiest remedy if you find it hard to resist temptation.
6) Take care of your mental health: if you have depression or anxiety, you might find it hard to give up video games as they are a form of escape for you. Talk to a psychotherapist to get help with these issues so you can start to feel better while also being able to reduce the time you spend playing.
